50+ Italian Christmas Day Dinner Recipes You'll Love - Simple Italian Cooking (1)

Planning an Italian Christmas Day Dinner

When planning an Italian Christmas dinner, it’s important to know that there is no single tradition to follow. Every family, especially depending on the region, will have a slightly different way of celebrating this festive occasion.

As an Italian myself, I can attest to the fact that in Italian culture, food and family go hand in hand. The good news is that so much of Italian cooking is actually very easy! In fact, many main courses can be made in advance and frozen making your holiday cooking stress-free.

Christmas Dinner Menu Basics

Generally, an Italian menu will first consist of the following.

  • Italian antipasto. These can be as simple as bowls of marinated olives or a full blown DIY Italian antipasto platter.
  • First course. This part of the meal includes foods such as lasagna, baked pasta, spaghetti, or any other type.
  • Second course. This is when the meat is served, usually consisting of sausage, chicken, beef or other cuts of meat.
  • Side Dishes. Side dishes are typically served during the first or second course.
  • Salads or fruit. This is usually served after the main course. In Europe, this is common practice to serve salads after the meal. I do this myself all the time as I find it helps aid digestion.
  • Desserts. Italian desserts are the best. These can be cakes, tortes, or simply a tray of Italian Christmas cookies. Remember to serve with fresh Italian coffee.

The recipes I’m sharing below are a mix of recipes I grew up with, as well as new Italian dishes I’ve learned over the years of learning how to cook Italian food.
