🌭 The Amish and Hot Dogs

And by the way, the Amish are not prolific observers of summer holidays like Memorial Day, the Fourth, and Labor Day. Some of the holidays, in their view, have militaristic roots and the Amish are pacifists, so they stay away from such trappings. They do, however, generally enjoy the extra day off and use it to have a picnic, go fishing, gardening, or just spend the time with family. And, yes, barbecuing outdoors is popular among the Amish all summer and they'll be among the millions this weekend firing up the grill to roast their dogs.

Today I'll share a couple of recipes to dress up that quintessentially American dish: the hot dog.

📜 Step-By-Step Amish Sweet Hot Dog Sauce Recipe

This Amish Sweet Hot Dog Sauce recipe comes from an Amish woman in Ohio. Now keep in mind, when these recipes call for catsup or pasta sauce, in an Amish kitchen, this usually means homemade versions from the canning closet.

Amish Sweet Hot Dog sauce, as the name implies, is a sweet sauce and I LOVE it, I love the way the sweetness tempers the dog and if you top it with some shredded cheese that you are getting this amazing flavor meld.

I like this sauce because it is not a meaty hot dog sauce. I'm not a huge fan of meat on meat, but some people like the meat sauce, sort of a hamburger meets hot dog hybrid.

What I like about this Amish Sweet Hog Dog Sauce recipe is that it's just so simple nad basic, not some complicated coney formulation. But there are ways you can pack even more flavor into this sauce. I mean, you could add some crumbled some cooked ground beef into it. A little ketchup and all of its spices would be an interesting addition. Salt, pepper, chili powder, cayenne pepper, and a squirt of yellow mustard would all mix well into this sauce. Just depends on your taste. And a spoon full of relish to top it all off would be awesome. And if you aren't worried about calories, sure, pile some shredded cheddar cheese on top. Some beans would add some additional protein and fiber. Then it all becomes more like a hot dog chili sauce on a chili dog!

When it comes to hot dogs, I'm not sure you could ever have too many condiments. This sweet hot dog sauce recipe also works very well on veggie dogs. And then pair your delicious dog with some french fries.

If you have leftover sauce, store in an airtight container and stick in the refrigerator.

I am fixing this now. I did add a few more onions though. Like a teaspoon and a half. Only because onions don't lay flat like powder.

    Hi Kevin,
I have it on good authority that the "hot dogs" at The Senate a restaurant in the Summit Park, Blue Ash, Ohio are some of the very best in the Cincinnati area. Wonderful toppings on them. Just a bit pricey but worth it if you want something a little different.
And Summit Park would be a wonderful place to bring your little girls. All kinds of things to do and the price is right, Free.
