Because of Virginia’s Racial Integrity Act of 1924, Mildred and Richard were arrested in Virginia, and sent out of the state. 5 years later, the Lovings appealed to the American Civil Liberties Union for legal aid. In 1967, through the 14th Amendment, the Supreme Court overturned all state laws that banned interracial marriages.

He recruited his brother-in-law, David Greenglass, who implicated Ethel as well. She was arrested as leverage, and charged as a full conspirator. Neither she nor Julius ever implicated anyone else who might have been involved.
